Debit versus Credit — What is the difference?

Credit and debit cards are a convenient way to pay for items without having to hassle with cash or checks. Both are usually widely accepted at most merchants and come with security features that can help prevent fraud. The biggest difference between a debit and credit card is where the funds that back the card are sourced.

A credit card allows you to borrow money from Members Choice or another financial institution that issues credit cards. The borrowed funds carry an interest rate you agree to pay along with the money spent on the card.

A debit card is funded or paid by deducting money directly from your checking account. In contrast to a credit card, debit cards won’t incur fees unless the cardholder overdraws the account. Using a debit card is a good way to stay on a budget and keep yourself aware of your account balance.

EMV Chip Cards – Smart & Safe Technology

The Members Choice Debit Mastercard is equipped with smart chip technology, designed to help keep your account secure, and provide increased protection against fraud.

Important: If you recently received a new Members Choice Debit Mastercard in the mail, please activate and/or use your new card. Once activated, your card will work as a Personal Identification Number (PIN) or credit transaction immediately. As a reminder, please be sure to update your card information with any automatic debits or merchants using your old card number.

We will gladly re-PIN your card. Simply call 281.398.9900 or visit a branch during our normal business hours. If you have not received your new card, please contact us.

For increased security, you may be required to enter your PIN for transactions at smart chip-enabled terminals.

Yes. If the terminal is not chip-enabled, you will need to swipe your card’s magnetic stripe. Online purchases still work the same way they did with your old card too.
Yes. Use your chip card at the exact same merchants you do now by inserting the card into card terminals that are chip-enabled or swiping your card at merchant locations that have not yet switched to chip-enabled card terminals. You can also use your card as you did before for online payments, telephone payments and at ATMs.
Just look for the universal contactless symbol at checkout or ask the cashier if you can pay by tapping. If they do not yet offer contactless, this card can be used normally at any merchant that accepts Mastercard.
Contactless payments require different information than those made over the phone or online. The cardholder’s name, three digit security code on the back of the card, and billing information like zip code are never transmitted when the card is used. Instead, the account information and a one-time-only code are sent from the card to the reader to identify that transaction.
Mastercard uses advanced fraud detection systems and artificial intelligence to spot suspicious activity and stop fraud in its tracks. If a card is compromised, your Debit Mastercard comes with a global zero liability promise and you will not be liable for unauthorized charges. For more details on zero liability, please refer to your Guide To Benefits (PDF).
  1. Be careful where you keep your card. Card readers are usually waved at back pockets and purses when you are not looking; keep cards close and out of easy access for scanning.
  2. There are several RFID sleeves and wallets available for purchase. These products cover the card and scramble the signal to prevent scanning.
  3. Use a wallet app on your phone that is protected with a strong PIN. This means you can leave your card at home and safe from scanning.
  4. Set alerts on your card account and regularly check your balance in online banking. When you see something suspicious, turn your card off and alert Mastercard and/or Members Choice as soon as possible.
